Quicksand | Romans 3:20

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. – Romans 3:20

{Romans 3:21-26 is the heart of the gospel. This week let’s work through this passage.}

In the first three chapters of Romans, Paul shows that everyone on the planet is under the curse of sin (including you). We either break the known law of God or the law written on our hearts (our conscience). Either way, we know the right thing to do, but often do the opposite.

Yet in our flesh we still try to be made right with God through obedience. We obey the Bible, seek to love others, or become vegans. We know our sin, and hope our goodness will outweigh it.

But here comes the bad news in verses 20: NO human being will be justified before God through good works. No amount of goodness can make God love you. In fact, the reality of “goodness”—or the law—actual shows how sinful you are. Don’t believe it? Just try to be 100% good today. Apart from Christ you can’t, no one can.

There’s good news coming tomorrow, but for now Romans 3:20 is the brutal truth that we are broken and unable to fix ourselves through obedience. Sin is our quicksand, the harder we try the deeper we sink.
