I have a really good father. I have never once doubted his love, care, or protection over me. He is a dad who always shows up and lets me know how proud he is of me. I hope you too have a good father, but maybe you don’t. Maybe your father doesn’t show up for you, or show his love and support.
Either way, if your earthly father is the best or the worst, you have a BETTER Father in heaven! He is for you and loves you far more than you could ever imagine.
The photo above captures my good father praying over me, but more than that it points to my BETTER Father in heaven who loves me more. No matter what your earthly father is like, know that in Christ you have a PERFECT heavenly Father who loves you and showers His grace and goodness upon you.
Here are twelve characteristics or actions about God, your good, good Father. Read these scriptures and rejoice!
1 — The LOVE of our Father
1 John 3:1-3 — “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”
John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
2 — The GRACE of our Father
Ephesians 1:1-6 — “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”
3 — ADOPTED by our Father
Galatians 4:4-7 — “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
4 — The CARE of our Father
Matthew 6:25 — “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
5 — The PROTECTION of our Father
Psalms 68:5 — “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.”
6 — The GOODNESS of our Father
Luke 11:10-13 — “For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
7 — The SOVEREIGNTY of our Father
Matthew 10:29-31 — “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
8 — The TRUSTWORTHINESS of our Father
Luke 23:46 — “Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
9 — The DISCIPLINE of our Father
Hebrews 12:7 — “It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?”
10 — The WISDOM of our Father
Romans 11:33 — “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!”
11 — The WORK of our Father
Isaiah 64:8 — “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
Ephesians 2:10 — “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
12 — The GLORY of our Father
Philippians 2:9-11 — “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Matthew 5:16 — “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
